Abstract

-Abstract-
The purpose of this study was to obtain baseline data for establishing oral health
policy and developing oral health education at the industries to improve oral health
among industrial workers. A question was used to interview 605 workers, 235 20-24
year-old workers and 370 35-44 year-old workers in Seoul and Anyang.
The result obtained and the conclusions discussed were as follows:
1. 60.5£¥ of respondents indicated that restriction of sugar prevented dental caries, 88.6£¥
of them indicated that toothbrushing prevented dental caries, 39.7£¥ of them indicated
that community water fluoridation prevented dental caries, and 56.6£¥ of them indicated
that fluoridated dentifrice prevented dental caries.
2. The knowledge, opinions and practices about dental caries prevention among 20-24
year-old workers were lower than those of 35-44 year-old workers.
3. 72.5£¥ of respondents reported that toothbrushing prevented periodontal disease, and
57.4£¥ of them reported that scaling prevented periodontal disease.
4. Industry-based oral health education programs about the dental caries preventive
effect of water fluoridation and fluoridated dentifrice, and the periodontal disease
preventive effect of scaling should be developed.
5. 67.4£¥ of respondents received oral examination last year at industries. Among those
53.2£¥ didn't receive dental treatment. 25.7£¥ didn't because they had no time. 44.9£¥
didn't because the lesion caused no pain.
6. Only 8.9£¥ of respondents received incremental oral health care.
7. 51.9£¥ of respondents agreed that they received incremental oral health care once six
months, and 33.2£¥ agreed once a year, 89.1£¥ reported that they agreed industry-based
incremental oral health care.
8. To improve the oral health among workers, industry-based incremental oral health
care programs that were covered with National Health Insurance should be developed.
